Department of Computer Applications

MCA is a two year professional Master’s Degree in Computer Science & its Applications. The course is designed to meet the growing demand for qualified professionals in the field of information technology. The MCA programme is dedicated to application development and thus has more emphasis on latest programming languages and tools to develop better and faster tools. State-of-the-art infrastructure, air conditioned computer labs with the latest advances in technology and comprehensive study material make this Department a class apart. “Tech Craft Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications organized “Inference The Symbol” activity on 02-03-2023 for the students of MCA and BCA to assess their knowledge and presence of mind on the displayed logo.”

This was a fun activity in which students had to guess logos of Companies, Businesses, Careers and Technical & Non- Technical brands.
Students participated in teams and each team had two students.
There were two rounds of the activity. In the first round, teams had to guess the logo within 30 seconds. In round two, the time limit was 20 seconds and the students also had to guess the well known personalities.
The following were declared as the winners:
1. Goodwin and Amritpal(BCA -4th SEM) stood first.
2. Zahir and Mohd. Arish (BCA-2nd SEM) stood second.
3.Ishika and Rajji(BCA-4th SEM) bagged third position.

“Tech-Craft-Corps Club of the Department of Computer Applications & IQAC organized a seminar on “LATEST TRENDS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE CUM INTERVIEW PREPARATION TIPS” on 27-02-2023.”

Er. Chandan Verma, Senior Manager from Dreamerz Education Services Amritsar was the Speaker for this seminar. He gave detailed information about “The components one needs to partly master in order to excel in English Language and also shared valuable tips to crack the interviews”.
The session consisted of some rudimentary insights about what specifically, English is and why, how and for what it should be acquired.
The Seminar was a great success and well appreciated by the students and faculty members.

In this event, the students of MCA and BCA participated.
The objective of the event was to develop the habbit of thinking beyond their technical knowledge ( thinking out of box) and encourage them about fun learning methods while enhancing their general knowledge and current affairs.
While participating in the quiz competition, students develop brainstorming and innovative learning techniques.
This activity contained two rounds:
The first round was GK quiz round and
the second round was Technical round.
As the activity started, participants were all geared up and passionate about winning the quiz.

TECH CRAFT CORPS CLUP of the Department of Computer Applications organized the Activity of “ANTAKSHARI” on 24th November 2022.

“Antakshari” is an Indian word which means the last letter. That is what the game is all about. The game can be played by two or more people and is popular as a group activity during commutes, and social gatherings. The first singer has to sing two complete lines and then s/he may stop at the end of those or following lines. The last letter of the last word sung is then used by the next singer to sing another song, starting with that letter. The winner or winning team is decided by a process of elimination. The person or team that cannot come up with a song with the right consonant is eliminated if their opponents can produce such a song.

The event comprises two rounds. The preliminary round was extremely entertaining, In which we provided chits and with the teams having to sing a song starting from particular word mentioned in the chit.

In Second round there were a battle round , in which team have to continue with the last word of previous song and where the song get dropped. The another team will continue with the song.

“Treasure Hunt” is a game or activity in which items are hidden in a particular area for students to search out and find. Usually, they’re given a set of clues to help them do this.

Treasure Hunts are very versatile activities. They can take place indoors or outdoors and can be used to support learning in a wide range of different subjects and topics. This is because students’s treasure hunt clues can be used to test and practice a variety of different academic skills and areas of knowledge.

There were one round in this activity and students was given 20 minutes to find the given items. The Winners selected based on the treasures and minimum time.

Tech Craft Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications organized “JAM” (Just A Minute) activity on 20th October 2022.
JAM is an impromptu speech where a speaker is supposed to express his or her ideas on the given topic within a minute. It is quite common to see a speaker experiencing nervousness when asked to speak instantly. This activity was an attempt to provide students a platform to showcase their talent and skills.
There was only one round in the activity.
In this round topic was given on the spot and a student had to speak instantly.
As the activity started we could see that all the participants were fully geared up and were also were fully passionate to win.

“Tech Craft Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications organized “DEBATE” Competition on 6th Oct 2022.”

In this event, 1st year students of MCA and BCA participated.
The objective of the event was to assess the knowledge of participants about the real world topics & issues.
There were two rounds. In the first round, the students were given 2 minutes to think about the topic and 1 minute to speak either in favour or against the topic.
In the second round, the selected teams were given 1 minute to prepare the topic and they were asked to speak for 30 seconds only.
All the participants were geared up and were fully passionate to win.

Department of Computer Applications organized DUMB CHARADES activity on 29-09-2022.

It is a guessing game where one team decides a word or phrase which is given to other team. Only actions has to be done and the player has to convey the answer only through actions.
It is rightly said actions speak louder than words. Participants enthusiastically exhibited their gesturing abilities with their tongue-tied.
The activity was aimed at sharing individual skills and talent amongst them.

Tech Craft Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications organized “Logo Guess Challenge” activity for the students of MCA and BCA to assess their knowledge about various technical and non-technical brands.
There were three rounds in the activity.
In the first, teams had to guess the logo within 30 seconds. In round two, the time limit was 20 seconds and in the third round, teams had to guess the logo, name and to spell it correctly within 15 seconds.
In all 20 students from the Department participated and the following teams were placed first, second and third and were awarded certificates.

Group discussion is a platform which gives the opportunity for young aspiring minds to put their opinions, innovative ideas, suggestions on table. Apart from being a healthy discussion, it also acts as a tool to enhance the speaking, idea generation and leadership skills of students.

Tech Craft Corps Club of the Department of Computer Applications organized the event “Dexterity” on 28th Oct 2021 for MCA & BCA Students.The objective of this competition was to develop the interest of students in the areas of Computer Science and Programming Languages.

A total of 53 students participated in this event.

A total of 15 students were selected for Round-2.

“WEBINAR On Web Development using PHP” on 18th June 2021

Tech-Craft-Corps Club of the Department of Computer Applications organized a Webinar on 18-6-2021 in which an alumni of MCA Batch 2012-2015 Ms. Shivani Sharma shared a piece of information on Web Development using PHP. Ms. Shivani Sharma currently employed as Sr. Web Developer and Team Leader in Netweb Technologies, Mohali. She has earned a rich experience of 6 years as Web Developer. She given brief introduction to various tags and attributes used for Web Development. She also created small web pages using PHP as a backend and HTML, CSS as Frontend. A total of 60 participants were participated in this webinar.

She has shared her experience from Global Group of Institutes to Canada and briefed the gathering about the Latest Trends in IT . She also gave detailed information on Cloud Computing, Server Administration, Various Programming Languages, Website Development, UI/UX Development, Mobile Technology, Networking, Core Scripting Languages

Tech-Craft-Corps Club of the Department of Computer Applications of Global Group of Institutes organized a Webinar on “Handling Data Using MySQL” on 5-6-2021. Er. Sandeep Jain, Database Specialist from Wolters Kluwer India Pvt. Ltd Pune was the Expert Speaker for this webinar. In his interactive session, he gave detailed information about the MySQL database – which is one of most popular sources for designing a database these days. Er. Jain also gave practical hands-on experience on creating tables and how to apply primary and foreign key constraints. The Webinar was a great success and well appreciated by the students and faculty members.

Todays, Tech-Craft-CorpsClub of the Department of Computer Applications of Global Group of Institutes organized a Webinar on “Security and Survival in Hyperconnected World”. Dr.Maninder Singh, Professor& Head, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology, Patiala was the Expert Speaker for this webinar. He explained from driverless cars to smart thermostats, from autonomous stock-trading systems to drones equipped, the Internet now has direct effects on the physical world. He explores the risks and security implications of our new, hyper-connected era, and lays out common-sense policies that will allow us to enjoy the benefits of this omnipotent period without falling target to the consequences of its insecurity.The webinar was a great success and well appreciated by the students and faculty members. E- certificate has been issued to all participants.

 

 

“PICTO” on 18th March 2021

Co-Curricular activities are those which are undertaken side by side with the curricular activities. A co-curricular activity essentially takes place outside a typical pen and pencil classroom experience. It gives the students an opportunity to develop particular skills. These activities actually are complementary to curricular activities that groom the students in the art of living. With this aim today “Tech Craft Corps Club” of Department of Computer Applications organized a departmental activity named “PICTO 2021” in seminar hall of
the Institute. In this event students need to participate in team of two members to recognize the images. The participants have to guess the images displayed on the projector and catch the word. The team who recognized more images treated as the winner of the day. Students participated in the event with full zeal and enthusiasm. There were 12 teams in first round from BCA & MCA classes out of which 7 were selected to participate in second round.
At the end, Ridhamand Ritish Malhotra from BCA 2 grab the first position apart from this Sourav Bhagat and Mritunjay Kumar from BCA 3 scored second position.

 

 

“TECHNICAL QUIZ” on 18th Feb 2021

Tech Craft Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications has organized “TECHNICAL QUIZ” during the department activity period. In this event, students of MCA and BCA have participated actively. The aim of the activity was to assess the technical skills and knowledge of the participants.There were 44 participants in first round from BCA & MCA classes out of which 10 were selected to participate in second round. At the end, the winner of competition were1st: Gaurav Kumar (BCA3),2nd: Raminder Kaur (MCA3) and 3rd: Ishqdeep Singh (BCA2)

 

 

“Webinar on Wearable Computing” on 6 Jan 2021

Department of Computer Applications, Department of Applied Sciences and Humanities jointly organized a webinar on “Wearable Computing” using ZOOM APP on 6th Jan 2021.
The Keynote speaker of the Webinar was Dr. Anil Kumar Verma, Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Thapar Institute of Engg& Technology, Patiala.
The webinar started with a brief introduction about basic networking concepts followed by its various practical aspects. Further, the talk was focussed on basics of networking, mobile communication, internet and practical implication of wearable computing. During the talk certain applications of this paradigm were discussed with an eye on future research directions at International level. Likely to be an eye-opener for young minds and the attendees.

Tech Craft Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications organized “Photography Competition” on 8th March 2019 in the Institute premises in which the students showcased their remarkable talent in Photography. Vaibhav & Harmeek Singh of Diploma ECE 4th Sem scored first position. Amit Kumar & Gagandeep of B.Tech CSE 8th Sem scored 2nd position and Neeraj Kumar & Jaskaran of B.Tech ME 6th Sem scored 3rd position. The winners were awarded with certificates by Dr. M. S. One day trip to Sri Anandpur Sahib on 16.02.2019

Department of Computer Applications Organized one day trip to Sri Anandpur Sahib on 16.02.2019 for their students. The purpose of the trip was to let the students know about the rich heritage of the Khalsa Panth. The students paid obeisance at Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib and also visited the heritage museum Virasat-e-Khalsa.

Seminar on “Machine Learning for Internet of Things” on 5th Feb 2019

Tech-Craft-Corps Club of the Department of Computer Applications of Global Institute of Management and Emerging Technologies organized a Seminar on “Machine Learning for Internet of Things” on 5th Feb 2019. Prof. Dr. Gurvinder Singh, former Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar was the Expert Speaker for the seminar. In his interactive session, he gave detailed information about Machine Learning – the fuel that’s driving the IoT forward into the 21st century. Dr. Singh also discussed about predictive analytics and how machine learning makes the IoT more secure. The Seminar was a great success and well appreciated by the students and faculty members.

Tech Craft Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications organized “Technical Aptitude Test” on 23rd Jan 2019.The Objective of the test was to assess the technical skills and knowledge of participants. More than 50 Students of different streams participated in this Competition. Ms. Manisha of MCA stood first position, Mr. Abhi Chohan of MCA stood 2nd position and Mr. Sagar Sethi of B.Tech CSE stood third Position. The winners were awarded with certificates by Dr. M. S. Workshop on “LAN Devices” (4th September 2018)

The science of Computers and IT has moved way ahead and continuous teaching with the latest concepts to students is becoming utmost necessary.
In order to clarify upon the basic concepts as being required by various IT giants, Tech-Craft-Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications of Global Institutes Amritsar has organized a Workshop on “LAN Devices” for its MCA & BCA students. First Technical Session was taken by Dr. Pankaj Deep Kaur, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science, Guru Nanak Dev University Regional Campus, Jalandhar on “IOT- A Catalyst for the Smarter World”. She initiated her talk by introducing definition of IOT with alternative examples, need of IOT, how this technology is being used in day-to-day life, important aspects of IOT, association between Big Data and IOT.Second Technical Session was taken by Dr. Sandeep Sood, Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering from Guru Nanak Dev University Regional Campus, Gurdaspur. He gave an illuminating talk on”Emerging trends in Internet of Things”. In his address, he explained the concept of IOT with examples, architecture of IOT, security issues and applications of IOT and various research challenges in IOT. In both technical sessions, the student actively participated and interacted with the speakers and raised a number of issues pertaining to the topics. Overall the workshop was a great success and well appreciated by the students and faculty members. National Seminar On Mobile Application Development using open source

Tech-Craft-Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications of Global Institute of Management & Emerging Technologies organized One-Day National Seminar on “Mobile Application Development Using Open Source” on 20th Feb 2018. Er. Vishal Khanna, Google certified trainer from DIPS Institute of Management & Technology, Jalandhar was the expert of the seminar. In his first interactive session he gave thorough information about Android, its Features, Android Versions, Android Devices, Android Architecture, Android Market, Play Store, Android IDE’s, Hello World Application, Android GUI, Android Activity, XML and JAVA used in Android, Toast, Intent and Action Listener. In his 2nd Technical Session he discussed about weighting and taught development of an Android Application (Calculator). The talk was very informative and was appreciated by the audience.

Department of Computer Applications of Global Institutes organized one Day National Workshop on “Embedded System” on 17th August 2017. First Technical Session was taken by Dr. Manjit Singh Bhamrah, Professor (Electronics and
Communication Engineering), Punjabi University, Patiala on “Introduction to Embedded System & Microcontroller”. He introduced to the students about the number of applications of Embedded Systems in our daily life. He highlighted topics namely the importance and evolution of microcontroller chip, criteria of choosing a microntroller chip based on available RAM/ROM memory & Input/output units, programming of the chip. The students had shown keen interest in programming and product development around microcontroller. The talk was very informative and well appreciated by the audience.
Second Technical Session was taken by Dr. Mandeep Singh Senior Faculty from Thapar University Patiala. Dr. Singh gave an exhilarating talk on WIRELESS EMBEDDED SYSTEMS FOR HEALTH MONITORING. In his address, Dr Singh appraised the group of more than 150 students of the latest trends in wearable sensors for continuously monitoring sensitive information like heart rate, respiration rate, oxygen level in blood for the subject that are doing critical tasks including sports activities and soldiers in ambush. This technology can save many lives by timely intervention. The talk was well received by both the faculty and students. In both technical sessions the student actively participated and interacted with the speakers and raised a number of issues pertaining to the topics. Overall the workshop was a great success and well appreciated by the students, faculty members and research scholars.

Project Exhibition

Tech-Craft-Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications of Global Institute of Management and Emerging Technologies held an exhibition of the software projects prepared by its students to showcase their quality work. In all 20 projects were exhibited, which were evaluated by a team of Computer Experts headed by Prof. Sandeep Kaur. Three projects were selected for the awards.

Tech Craft Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications organized one Day Seminar on topic “Smart Grid & Iot”. Dr. Anil Verma from Thapar University Patiala delivered a lecture on this occasion. He explained in details the concept of Smart Grid and its advantages. Further, the use of SCADA software system in preparing smart grids was also discussed. Additionally, in his discussion on the topic “Internet of things” the concept of communication between various objects (things) and architecture of IOT was highlighted. Moreover, various tools available in market based on IOT technologies were also explained. The students were shown the videos about the futuristic applications of IOT. Tech Craft Corps Club of Department of Computer Applications organized one Day National Seminar on “Real Life Data Mining” on 20th September 2016. First Technical Session was taken by Dr. Parteek Bhatia from Thapar University Patiala on “Machine Learning and Data Mining for Real World Applications”. Dr. Bhatia highlighted the concept of Machine Learning. Machine learning is now most widely used for mining of real world data, specially in Big Data analytics, analysis of Web click data, mining of medical records and in biology engineering. Dr. Bhatia illustrated supervised and unsupervised types of machine learning with many real world examples. Important data mining algorithms for clustering, classification and association mining of data and its implementation in popular data mining tool WEKA was also being discussed in this session.
Second Technical Session was taken by Dr. Kuljit Kaur from Department of Computer Application, GNDU, Amritsar on “Real life Data Mining Applications: Challenges & Solutions”. Dr. Kuljit discussed the potential of Data Mining technology to help answer a number of questions related to different applications domain.

A Two-Day “International Conference on Communication, Information and Computing Technology” (ICCICT-2015) was organized by the Department of Computer Applications and Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The Conference saw more than 250 quality research submission by research scholars of a large number of Technical Institutes and Universities from all over the country and abroad. Keynote speakers Dr. Deepak Garg- Professor Deptt. of Computer Science-Thapar University Patiala and and Dr. D. Dinakar from NIT Warangal delivered their talk on “Web Intelligence” and “Intensity Modulated Fiber Optic Loop Vibration Measurement” respectively. Eight sessions were held on Day-1 and the remaining 8 on Day-2. Many papers on hot contemporary research areas like Data Mining, Big Data, Mobile and Pervasive Computing, Cloud Computing, Genetic Algorithms were animatedly discussed and debated. New ideas, concepts and theories on various cutting edge technologies were heatedly discussed across various technical sessions.

Dr. Anil Verma DCSE from Thapar University Patiala delivered an expert talk on the topic “Optimal and Effective use of social Networking Sites”. He initiated his talk by underlining the importance of Internet Media and then described the concept of social networks. Dr. verma also touched upon the SWOT Analysis of the social networking aspect. The functioning of the major social networking sites such as – Facebook, Twitter, Orkut, Myspace were discussed. Dr. Verma highlighted about the use of these social networking sites for academic purpose. Further, the students were made aware about the idea of how to create and manage a social networking site. In the end, the basics of netiquettes and precautionary measures to be taken while surfing these sites were also discussed. The talk was very timely and well appreciated by the audience.

Dr. Lakhwinder Kaur DCSE from Punjabi University Patiala Patiala delivered a talk on “Digital Image Processing & Research Issues”. The expert focused on the different operations performed in digital image processing. The expert gave introduction of mathematical model of various digital image processing techniques. The expert also touched the prevalent research issues in the subject of digital image processing. She also focused on the applications of image processing in different areas like medical imaging, remote sensing, transmission and encoding, feature extraction etc. The main highlight of the talk was training imparted to participants on performing different image manipulations using MATLAB.

Dr. Amadeep Kaur DCSE from Punjabi University Patiala delivered a talk on “Image enhancement in spatial and frequency domain using MATLAB”. The expert focused on various image enhancement techniques to improve the quality of the image in spatial and frequency domain. She discussed how a particular technique enhance some features and degrade some other features in the given digital image. She also discussed that the image enhanced using spatial and frequency domain techniques can be further used for autonomous machine perception.

Guest Lecture by Dr. Maninder Singh, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Thapar University Patiala delivered a talk on “Network Security (ARP spoofing)”. Dr. Singh scholarly discusses on policies adopted by a network administrator to prevent and monitor unauthorized access, misuse, modification, or denial of a computer network and network-accessible resources.

Dr. Kawaljeet Singh, Director,University Computer Centre, Punjabi University, Patiala delivered a talk on “Placement avenues with respect to intelligent web base e-governance applications”. He emphasised on developing simple real time applications that can be further used for the Economic Growth of a State and Society. He started the lecture by explaining the meaning of Governance. He depicted the mind-set of Public Sector employee, Bureaucracy and Politicians. He stressed upon that when monopoly will be substituted with multi-delivery channels, discretion will be accounted for, authority will be decentralised and accountability is guaranteed. He explained the progression of Citizen centric services in India. The approach “Think Big, Start Small and Scale Fast” is the ultimate philosophy to develop such applications. Very soon we will see all Government Services accessible to the common Citizen in his locality through common delivery outlets. The only things that are to be ensured while developing such applications is are to ensure efficiency, transparency and reliability of such services at affordable costs. He presented number of “best practices” in the field of e-Governance. He lauded the contribution of Dr. Nirmaljeet Singh Kalsi, IAS and Dr. Rajender, IAS in the fields of e-Governance. He demonstrated the projects undertaken by the undergraduates which are of immense contribution to the Society. Dr. Singh predicted that there is a trend towards more and more usage of Online Intelligent Applications for improved Governance. These intelligent applications are inherently multi-user, distributed, employ new era tools based on web technologies, data warehouses and data mining. He preached to the faculty members that small scale web applications related to different facets of e-Governance, carried out from top to bottom, with the help of students at College Level can prove to be a good platform to describe students, latest technologies and even earn considerably. He was of the opinion that all such developments require Aesthetic Sense, Innovative Minds, Team Work, Methodology, Knowledge of Scripting Languages and Database Technologies. Fortunately all these are amply available in Punjab.

Dr. Sharma scholarly discusses on internet-based cloud computing, exploring the characteristics, service models, and deployment models in use today, as well as the benefits and challenges associated with cloud computing.
