Bachelor of Science in Operation Theatre Technology is course that helps the students in gaining knowledge and understanding the complexities of Operation Theatre Technology. It is a profession which deals with a combination of professionalism, skills and most importantly ethics. They also get wonderful work opportunities in surgical departments of public and private hospitals. An OT technician is in charge of the Operation Theatre along with that they preparing, cleaning and organize surgical instruments before surgery, obeying surgeons order and dealing with anaesthesia equipment. Their primary role is to assist the Surgeons, Specialist, Anaesthesiologists and Nurses. Working as Operation Theatre Technologists, they get to work and grow in the operating theatres, ICUs and emergency departments of hospitals and nursing homes.With an ever-increasing need for world-class healthcare services, students will be handpicked by transplant teams, orthopaedic clinics, gynaecology sections, cancer units, surgery, special care baby units, etc.

PROGRAM OUTCOME (PO)

PO1: Basic knowledge:Applythe basic knowledge of pathophysiology of common conditions requiring surgical procedures

PO2: Preparation of Operation Theatre:Prepare the operation theatre, load and label requested drugs, gather and assemble the surgical equipment for common surgical procedures as per the complexity and duration

PO3: Technical Support: Manage the overall upkeep of the equipment used in intensive care unit and transport of critically ill patients and assist the specialist in resuscitation, management and transfer of such patients with appropriate paraphernalia.

PO4: Emergency assistance: Assist consultant in emergency department while receiving acutely ill patients, stabilize them and transport in or out of hospital as per the individual needs.

PO5: Operation Theatre Technologist and society: Function as a member of rescue / code blue team in recognizing cardiac arrest and participate in revival cum cardiopulmonary resuscitation inside and outside hospital.

PO6: Modern tool usage: Organize equipment and monitors for procedures outside operation theatre including endoscopies, imaging, electro convulsive therapy and transport etc. and monitor through the procedures.

PO7: Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of biomedical waste on society as well as environment and to manage the hazardous waste following biomedical waste disposal protocols.

PO8: Individual and team work: Contribute in planning, setting up, commissioning, maintaining and managing operation theatre, emergency departments, and intensive care unit, cardiac catheterization lab and emergency response services as a team member.

PO9:Ethics: Practice professional and ethical responsibilities with high degree of credibility, integrity and social concern.

PO10:Communication & pre-operative preparation: Recognize the anxiety of patients in pre-operative state and appropriately assist to shift and position patient for surgical procedure.

At the end of the program, the student will:

PSO1: The technologist also performs equipment validations, calibrations, quality controls, statistical control of observed data, and recording normal operations.

PSO2:This program deals with healthcare professional who have the skills and knowledge to prepare and maintain Operation Theatre as well as to assist anesthetists in handling emergencies outside of OT Room.

PSO3: Competency to Identify and inspire to maintain a sterile field and follow infection control policies and procedures in operation theatre.

Program Educational Objectives (PEO):

PEO-1: Students will be able to learn the terminology of the subject and basic knowledge of cells, tissues, blood and to understand anatomy and physiology of human body. This subject will develop an understanding of the structure and function of organs and organ systems in normal human body.

PEO-2:To produce graduates who are able to classify, identify, use of instruments, sterilization, cultural requirements and to perform different microbiological tests in clinical microbiology lab.

PEO-3:To produce graduates that are able to learn the terminology of the subject and basic knowledge of cells, tissues, blood and to understand anatomy and physiology of human body

PEO- 4: To produce graduates who are aware of the composition of blood and methods of estimating different components of blood.

PEO-5: To produce graduates who would be able to Students will be able to know the basic concepts of Hematology & routine clinical investigations of Hematology laboratory.

Blood Bank Training for BSc OTT-4th Semester Students
The Department of Operation Theatre Technology organized an enriching blood bank training at KVI Blood Bank, Amritsar for 10 days for the students of B.Sc. OTT 4th semester.
The training aimed to provide practical exposure to the students about the latest laboratory techniques and technologies.
Initially, the students were introduced to the various departments/sections of the blood bank such as Blood Collection Room, SDPC Room, Sterilization Washing Area, Transmissible Disease Lab, Cross Matching Room and Component Room and also briefed them of various equipments and their working along with their principles which were Sealer Machine, Oxygen Cylinder, Weighing Machine, Micropipette.
Under the guidance of Ms Suman and Ms Ranjana, the students got to know about the guidelines to be followed before entering the different sections of the Blood Bank where they followed the good sampling practices.
In addition, the students had the opportunity to interact with professionals (Dr. Pawandeep Rishi, Dr. Ravi Kumar Mahajan, Ms Manjit Kaur and Mr. Nitish) and gained practical insights.
The students have already participated twice in Blood Donation Camp near Durgiana Temple during their training period.
The visit to KVI Blood Bank Amritsar was a fantastic opportunity for the students of OTT-4th semester who gained practical exposure to the latest Techniques such as collection, storage, transfusion of blood and its components.
The students highly appreciated the efforts of the department and management of the institute for providing such an opportunity.

The Department of OTT arranged a Peer Tutoring Session on the topic of “Equipment Used in Operation Theatre”, on 12th April, 2023 which proved to be very useful for the students.
The session was held under the guidance of Dr. Manbir Kaur.
The speaker for the session was Ms Harpreet Kaur, a first year B.Sc. OTT student.
During the session, she provided a very important information about an Operating Theater, a facility within a hospital where surgical operations are carried out in an aseptic environment.
She discussed about various equipments like defibrillators, oxygen concentrators, sterilizer machine, suction machine, anaesthesia machine, operation table and beautifully explained the working as well as significance of the same.
Ms Harpreet Kaur gave detailed information about how to prepare an operation theatre prior to surgery.
She covered the following points in her discussion :
1. Need to change into a hospital Gown.
2. About ID bracelet.
3. Insertion of intravenous catheter (IV) give anesthetics and other medicines.
4. Rolling to the operating room on a stretcher.
The students were highly impressed with her presentation, which was both informative and engaging.
The peer tutoring session was a part of continual efforts to provide students with the best possible learning experience.
Such sessions are very important for students for boosting up their confidence level.
Many more such sessions will be organized in the days to come in the Department.

 

“MLS / OTT /RIT Department Organized the “ *Blind Artist ” Activity on 23rd Feb. 2022 in Pharmacy Department.”

In this activity ,One player is given a picture of an object or word. The person doesn’t know what it is and he has to describe the image using words that will help in identifying the object. The other person draws the object on the basis of the verbal description given and their own guess work.
It was very intertesting and brain storming activity.

TALK ON FATTY LIVER

Department of MLS , RIT and OTT organised a expert talk on Fatty Liver on 16/02/23 by Dr. Jagdeep Singh, DM Gastroenterologist Fortis Escort Hospital Amritsar.

He discussed about Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver disease (NAFLD) which is a disorder characterized by the excess accumulation of fat in hepatocytes in about 40% of individuals. A subset of patients can develop progressive fibrosis, which can progress to cirrhosis.
He also advised about the habbit of daily exercise for atleast 20-30 minutes.
Dietary habbits also contribute in the cause of fatty liver. He advised to take three regular meals per day including 3-4 liters of water.
There are many causes of Fatty Liver and one of them is deficiency of Vitamin – D. To overcome the deficiency of vitamin – D, he advised the audience to take morning sun bath.
Dr. Jagdeep Singh’s lecture on Fatty liver was very knowledgeable and was very useful for everyone especially students.
At the end there was an interaction session and students asked my question related to the topic which were satisfactorily answered by the learned speaker.
The students and faculty members thanked the speaker and requested him to deliver few more lectures on similar topics.
The lecture was highly appreciated by the faculty and students.

December 2022 to see the functioning of their Operation Theatre.

 

 

The Department of Operation Theatre Technology organized a visit to “Shoor Multi Super Specialty Hospital”, Khazana Gate, Amritsar on 22nd December 2022 to see the functioning of their Operation Theatre.
The students were accompanied by three faculty members.
In this visit, the students gained knowledge of OT room, OT lights, Anesthesia Machine, Oxygen Supply Machine, Oxygen Cylinder, Medical Glass aAarm Panel, Laparoscopic Surgery Instruments, Endoscopy Surgery Instruments, C-ARM Machine as well as emergency and lifesaving drugs.
They were also given practical demonstration as how to enter OT, where to find OT dress and other general OT instructions and etiquettes.
In addition, the staff of the Hospital also demonstrated different intubation techniques as well as methods of administration of general, local and regional anesthesia.
The staff members of Hospital satisfactorily answered all the queries of the students during the demonstration.
The students were also very interactive and asked many questions during their visit.
