Department of Fashion Design organised a visit to PITEX

As a part of experiential learning and practical exposure, the students of Fashion Design visited an exhibition-cum-sale showcasing a diverse range of textiles, traditional art and craft forms, handmade products, and cultural artefacts. The objective of this visit was to provide students with firsthand understanding of India’s rich textile heritage, craftsmanship, and contemporary market practices.
Purpose of the Visit aimed to enhance students’ knowledge of traditional and modern textile varieties, develop appreciation for handcrafted products, sustainable practices, and artisan skills, expose students to real market trends, pricing, and consumer preferences and encourage inspiration for design projects, colour palettes, material selection, and surface techniques.
Exhibition Highlights
The exhibition offered an impressive display of regional and handmade items, including:
1. Textiles and Handlooms: Traditional handwoven sarees and fabrics from various states, shawls and stoles with intricate embroidery, weaving techniques, and rich textures, Persian carpets featuring detailed motifs, symmetrical patterns, and traditional knotting techniques.
2. Art and Craft Items
• Handcrafted decorative articles, pottery items, wall hangings, and wooden carvings.
• Knitting and crochet products such as bags, garments, mufflers, and accessories.
• Home furnishing items including cushion covers, table runners, bedspreads, and embroidered linens.
3. Regional Delicacies and Cultural Products
• A variety of state foods and traditional snacks, offering students a glimpse into India’s cultural diversity.
• Unique lifestyle products, jewellery, and accessories inspired by local traditions and artistry.
Student Experience and Learning Outcomes
The students actively interacted with artisans, stall owners, and craft makers, gaining insights into Raw materials, techniques, and processes used in weaving, knitting, crochet, dyeing, and embroidery. Differences between hand-made and machine-produced items. Challenges faced by artisans and the importance of promoting indigenous crafts. Pricing strategies, customer engagement, and marketing approaches used in exhibitions.
Students also observed colour combinations, textures, motifs, and surface decorations that can be incorporated into their classroom projects and design assignments. The visit helped them connect classroom knowledge with real-world applications.
The exhibition-cum-sale provided an enriching and inspiring learning experience for Fashion Design students. It broadened their understanding of India’s textile and craft culture, encouraged creative thinking, and strengthened their appreciation for sustainable and handmade products. Such field visits are essential in bridging the gap between theory and practice, enabling students to evolve into informed, empathetic, and innovative designers.
We express our sincere gratitude to our respected Campus Director for granting permission and extending full support for organizing the students’ visit to the exhibition-cum-sale.
