Law Students Visit District Consumer Commission, Amritsar

Students from the School of Legal Studies, Global Group of Institutes, undertook a two-day educational visit to the District Consumer Commission, Ranjit Avenue Amritsar on 22nd and 24th April 2025.

This visit was a part of their practical legal training which provided exposure to the students with regard to the functioning of consumer dispute redressal bodies.

The purpose of the visit was to provide students with real-time exposure to consumer disputes resolution mechanisms under the Consumer Protection Act.

The law students
from first and 2nd year classes were accompanied by HOD Dr Gaurav Khanna and other faculty members of the Law Department.

Students gained meaningful knowledge through structured observation and interaction with the officials.

Students had the opportunity to observe live proceedings, understand procedural formalities, and witness the practical application of consumer law in day-to-day matters.

The officials and presiding members of the Commission encouraged the students to actively engage in the legal processes.

Informative sessions and informal discussions allowed students to clarify their doubts regarding jurisdiction, case documentation, filing processes, and the legal reasoning behind judgments.

The students found the visit enriching and informative, gaining first-hand experience that would enhance their academic and professional growth.

Mr. Amandeep Singh Bains, Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum- Secretary District Legal Services Authority, Amritsar addressed the faculty and students at the Global Group of Institutes.
The School of Legal Studies of the Institute organised this Guest lecture on,’ Lok Adalat: An Effective Mechanism For Dispute Resolution ‘ to enhance the knowledge and understanding of the students in the areas of alternative dispute resolution, its procedures and its impact on the legal system.

Mr. Amandeep Singh Bains appreciated the gesture of Dr. Akashdeep Singh Chandi, Vice Chairman of Global Group for taking the initiative to organise this knowledge enhancing session and apprised the students and faculty about the Lok Adalat system, its significance in reducing the burden on regular courts and its contribution in ensuring affordable and accessible justice for all.

He informed the gathering about the introduction of Legal Services Authority, the linkage between Article 21 of the Constitution of India and the Right to free legal aid. Lok Adalat, he informed, were constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act 1987 at the National, Provincial, District and Taluka levels.

The NALSA ,PALSA and DSLA are bodies that are set up to provide speedy justice to the litigants who approach the authority with mutual consent. He also informed that the decisions arrived at the Lok Adalat are binding and final and no appeal challenging the order can be filed after the decision by litigants.

He further mentioned about the categories of people entitled to legal services under the Act. He informed about nature of the cases that can be referred to Lok Adalats for consideration.

Mr. Bains acquainted the students about the cases suitable for Lok Adalats namely Motor Accident cases, Damage case’s, Family disputes, unpaid loan cases, landline related cases, some Civil and Criminal cases and cases related to Unpaid bills etc.

He also interacted with the students towards the end of the session and answered their queries.

Dr. Akashdeep Singh Chandi, Vice Chairman Global Group of Institutes accompanied by Dr. P. K. Sharma, Dean Students Welfare welcomed and honoured the esteemed guest by presenting him with Bouque and Momento.

Dr. Gaurav Khanna HOD, Dr Jasbir Kaur, Prof. Jatinder Kaur, Prof. Topaz Randhawa, Prof. Karishma Jain and Prof. Mansi Kad of the School of Legal Studies and other faculty members alongwith a large number of law students were present during the session.
