The Department of Fashion Design organized an industrial visit to the Punjab Institute of Textile Technology (PITT), Amritsar, one of the oldest and pioneer textile institutes in India, established in 1920 by the Punjab Government. The institute operates under the Directorate of Technical Education and Industrial Training (Technical Education Wing), Punjab, and is affiliated with the Punjab State Board of Technical Education, Chandigarh. PITT is located in the holy city of Amritsar on G.T. Road, opposite Guru Nanak Dev University.
The primary objective of the visit was to provide students with exposure to the historical evolution of textile machinery and deepen their understanding of yarn and fabric production processes.
During the visit, the students had the unique opportunity to observe some of the oldest textile machines of the Manchester brand, which were installed during the British era and are considered among the first machines introduced in the city. These machines offered valuable insights into the early development of textile manufacturing and the technological advancements that have shaped the industry over time.
Mr. Amrik Singh, MBA in Apparel Production, Head of the Institute, conducted an informative and engaging session for the students. He explained in detail the working of various machines, the importance of thread and yarn quality, and the concept of thread counts.
The students gained valuable insights into:
• Historical textile machinery and their significance in the evolution of the industry
• Basics of yarn production and thread formation
• Understanding yarn counts and their impact on fabric quality
• Functional aspects and operation of traditional textile machines
The visit proved to be highly educational and enriching, offering students a blend of historical perspective and technical knowledge. It helped bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world industrial practices.
The Department of Fashion Design extends its sincere gratitude to the management and staff of PITT for their guidance, support throughout the visit. The experience was both informative and inspiring for the students, leaving a lasting impression on their academic journey.
